SUPPLEMENTS SCANDAL!

March 6, 2015

Not sure if you saw this article in the NY Times on 2/13/15 – It upset me greatly, as I felt consumers who were using supplements to live more healthy lives were being duped.

The new York Attorney General’s Office “had run tests on popular store brands of herbal supplements at the retailers — Walmart, Walgreens, Target and GNC — which showed that roughly four out of five of the products contained none of the herbs listed on their labels. In many cases, the authorities said, the supplements contained little more than cheap fillers like rice and house plants, or substances that could be hazardous to people with food allergies.”

Supplements vary TREMENDOUSLY in quality and potency, and I think brand really does matter. So to help you, I have listed a few of my favorite brands here. These are brands I use myself and would give my children after a lot of research utilizing the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, and choosing companies that have standards of USP guidelines or higher. It does not mean what you are taking is bad just because it is not represented on this list. But I encourage you to do research and look for yourself.

Pure Encapsulations – Excellent all around. I take magnesium glycinate from them, as well as Ashwaghanda and their Best Rest Formula

New Chapter – I like their Zyflamend for joint pains – I reach for it before Advil or Aleve

Nordic Naturals for Fish Oil

Green Pastures for Fermented Cod liver oil

Dr. Ohhira for probiotics

Metagenics – I like them, but please, make them less expensive!
